Khalid Taylor
Khalid Taylor (he/they) is an Afro-Latiné, gender-expansive teaching artist, documentary songwriter, and personal growth consultant whose work centers on amplifying voices from historically marginalized communities, particularly LGBTQ+ individuals. Khalid has worked with DocSong since 2021, when they were first trained in the documentary songwriting method, and has since facilitated songwriting across DocSong’s programs and grown into a teaching artist educator who trains other musicians in the DocSong approach.
Khalid holds a bachelor’s degree in Musical Studies from Oberlin College and Conservatory and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University, where they explore how collaborative, narrative-centered documentary songwriting can support individual and communal health for people of color and LGBTQ+ communities. They are also the founder of SOL Songs, a practice dedicated to creating healing, reflective spaces through music.
Previously, Khalid served as Student Life Program Coordinator in Oberlin College’s Multicultural Resource Center, supporting students through mentorship and community-building programs, and as a lecturer at Yale’s Geffen School of Drama, where they co-taught Towards an Antiracist Theater Practice. Khalid is also the host and producer of the podcast Songs Through Their Eyes, which highlights meaningful lived experience through the documentary songwriting process.
