Michael is passionate about pursuing and sharing the beauty of God through redemptive artistry. A native of Greenville, SC, he fell in love with music at an early age and began piano lessons at age 9. His passion for people and music led him to pursue a career in music education that has encompassed all levels of learners from early childhood to adulthood in contexts ranging from public schools and universities to non-profit organizations in the US, South Africa, and Europe. In 2007, he founded the Greenville Textile Heritage Band in partnership with the Greenville Textile Heritage Society to preserve and celebrate the rich musical heritage of his hometown’s unique textile band history through free concerts and a recording project. His work has earned him multiple Individual Artist Grants from Greenville Metropolitan Arts Council and a nomination for the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award. In 2021 he was elected to a two-year term as president of the South Carolina Music Educators Association. An award-winning conductor, Michael leads the University Symphony Orchestra at Bob Jones University where he serves as Professor and Chair of the Division of Music. He holds a PhD in music education from the University of South Carolina. He enjoys songwriting, riding his gravel bike in the mountains, and volunteering with his church music ministry.
