Our
Mission

DocSong partners with musicians and communities to transform stories into songs that heal, empower, and inspire.

Our
Vision

We envision musicians as catalysts for community transformation—trained to help people turn their stories into songs that build empathy, heal wounds, and strengthen connection across difference.

Our
Values

  • Deep Listening: We begin by listening—with humility, curiosity, and care—honoring the dignity and courage of every storyteller.
  • Creative Collaboration: Our work is rooted in co-creation between storytellers and teaching artists—building trust, sharing ownership, and creating art that honestly reflects their experience.
  • Community Partnership: We train musicians to lead documentary songwriting in their own communities—where they already have relationships, trust, and deep understanding of local culture and context.
  • Art as Civic Practice: We see musicians as cultural leaders—helping bridge divides, spark dialogue, and reimagine what's possible.
  • Equity and Inclusion: We commit to examining our own practices, seeking feedback, and addressing barriers to access. We actively challenge systems of exclusion and work to make documentary songwriting accessible, inclusive, and reflective of the diverse communities we serve.

Who We Support

DocSong trains teaching artists who bring documentary songwriting to their communities. These musicians facilitate collaborative songwriting sessions in schools, senior centers, community organizations, and beyond—helping people transform their stories into songs that heal, build connection, and strengthen communities.
