Join us for a documentary songwriting workshop on Vinalhaven. Bring a personal story and work with a small group to transform it into an original song through a collaborative creative process.
What is Documentary Songwriting?
Documentary songwriting is a unique collaborative process that honors the authenticity of personal storytelling while making it accessible through music. Unlike traditional songwriting, documentary songs are created using the exact spoken words from someone’s personal story, preserving the natural rhythm and authentic voice of the storyteller.
This process brings together three core qualities:
Authenticity – The song emerges directly from your spoken words and personal experience, maintaining the genuine voice and emotional truth of your story.
Accessibility – The resulting melody and lyrics can be sung by anyone, regardless of musical training, creating songs that invite community participation.
Artistry – Through collaboration between storyteller and teaching artist, stories are shaped into compelling songs that resonate with both the teller and future listeners.
The Workshop Process
Our Vinalhaven workshop creates a supportive environment where 6-10 participants work together to explore the documentary songwriting method. The workshop will include:
Story Sharing – Participants bring personal stories and share them in a circle of deep listening. These stories can celebrate moments of joy and pride, provide space to process experiences of grief and trauma, or uplift the seemingly small things that make us who we are.
Collaborative Exploration – Working as a group, we’ll select stories to develop into songs. The teaching artist guides participants through identifying the natural rhythm, emotional core, and key phrases within each story.
Lyric Development – Using the storyteller’s exact words as source material, the group collaboratively shapes verses, choruses, and refrains. The storyteller remains central to this process, ensuring the song captures the authentic emotions and meaning of their experience.
Melody Creation – Together, we’ll discover melodies that emerge from the natural speech patterns and emotional landscape of the story. No musical experience is required – we’ll guide you through finding the song that already exists within your words.
Song Completion – Each documentary song is crafted to be both deeply personal to the storyteller and universally accessible to listeners, creating bridges of empathy and connection.

Community Impact
Documentary songs remind us all of what it means to be human. As one participant shared: “It is a fascinating process to see one of my very personal stories transformed into a song. For my refrain, every time I sing it, I become more grateful. Hearing other people sing along with me makes me feel more connected to them.”
This workshop is part of DocSong’s mission to build a world where shared stories and music connect us to each other, creating thriving communities committed to deep listening, empathy, and mutual care.
