This introduction workshop offers a hands-on experience with the documentary songwriting method—a collaborative process that turns spoken stories into finished songs.

What You’ll Do:

Through guided activities and group practice, you’ll experience key elements of documentary songwriting: listening deeply to personal stories, discovering the natural melody and rhythm in speech, and beginning to shape narratives into song.

You’ll work alongside other curious musicians in a supportive environment, learning by doing rather than just observing. No prior songwriting experience is required—just bring your curiosity, an open mind, and your instrument if you’d like.

What You’ll Leave With:

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a clear understanding of what documentary songwriting is, how the method works, and whether this practice resonates with you. Many participants use introduction workshops to decide if they want to pursue our intensive Teaching Artist Training program.

Who Should Attend:

This workshop is designed for musicians who are curious about using music for community connection and social impact. Whether you’re exploring new creative approaches, considering a shift in your practice, or simply intrigued by the idea of turning stories into songs, this workshop offers a low-commitment way to discover if documentary songwriting is your next step.
