Two Front Teeth

Two Front Teeth

Ellen recalls a fourth-grade summer day playing velcro paddle with her twin neighbors, Neo and Max. She challenges Max to throw as hard as he can—just to see what happens. The ball hits her square in the face, knocking out her two front teeth. After tears, ice, and a blood-soaked tea towel, the kids are back outside playing within twenty minutes. And Ellen’s tooth fairy, Quintana LaRue, later writes to remind Ellen how brave she is.

Song Lyrics

Fourth Grade, summertime / We used to play out front
Twins, Neighbors, Neo and Max / We used to play out front

Velcro pads with a tennis ball / We used to play out front
Leap, Glide, Catch the ball / We used to play out front

Now Max and I are hucking the ball, / Neo’s on the stairs
Every time I catch the ball / My arm pushes back

Throw it as hard as you can and let’s see!
Misses.
Winds up for a second round

Oh my god, oh my god, Ellen, what’s wrong?

Hold out my hand, my two front teeth!
My two front teeth fell out.

Oh well, better carry on..

Fourth Grade, summertime / We used to play out front
Twins, neighbors, Neo and Max / We used to play out front

Hold out my hand, my two front teeth!
My two front teeth fell out.

Tooth fairy, Quintana La Rue
Told me how brave I was / how painful it was / how nice it was
To get rid
Of
Your two front teeth!
